Edwardian Windows

By the beginning of the 20th Century, people were moving away from the uniform designs of the Georgian and Victorian era that mass production brought, preferring more artistic designs associated with Edwardian windows.

Improving public transport also meant people began to commute which created the suburbs. Suburban houses were larger with more garden space including a front garden and porch. Servants were less common so no need for their “quarters”, giving homes more useable space.

What is an Edwardian window?

Edwardian-style windows have a more artistic design allowing a great deal more natural light. The top section of Edwardian-style windows typically has multiple panes of glass in a decorative style, whilst the remainder has simply one or two large panes of glass to allow us much daylight in.

3 Styles of Edwardian Windows

1. Edwardian-style casement windows have hinges on their sides enabling them to open, usually, outwards.

2. Edwardian sash windows operate similarly to Victorian sash windows using a weight and pulley system and have a fixed top sash and sliding bottom sash that can be opened and closed vertically.

3. Edwardian bay windows are very popular as they project outward from the exterior walls, making them aesthetically pleasing. They allow a little more space inside of the home and a great deal more light too.
