Should I Paint My Sash Windows ?

Depending on the type of sash windows you have, painting may not be necessary. For example timber sash windows may flake over time, whereas UPVC don’t (usually).

Sash windows are predominantly made of softwood so painting protects them against decay. The top layers of heavy paint can be removed effectively with chemical strippers to avoid any build-up.

Avoid thick coats to reduce the risk of jamming and be careful not to get any paint on your sash cords. Similarly avoid getting paint on the window glass, but if it does happen it can be removed using a chemical rub and scraper.

A common issue when repainting is the window sticking so be sure to apply an even layer of paint on all parts, and not too thick.

Once dry, wash the window with a gentle soapy liquid or detergent which can help the sliding mechanism and remove any dirt.

Obviously exterior painting is more difficult than painting inside, so be sure to be extra careful and in some instances scaffolding may be necessary.
